LAKE ONTARIO
Each canvas is 68 x 10"
In search of a balance between the optical, the painterly, the object, the color, the actual light, the wall and space. Trying for something that can offer multiple ways of being seen/ experienced, the overall and the detailed.
My son and I drove to Lake Ontario last fall and I was struck by how much was happening looking out into that expanse of water, light, color, atmosphere and a variety of edges. You might at first assume it was a scene of straight lines separating sky water and land but it was impossible to see everything as a single "image" and the idea of making something that required turning the head (at least up close) occurred to me.
Incorporating the abstract ideas of time and the balance between the overall and nuance at once is a way of challenging the senses (something like music). And also related to time is the speed at which these things can be perceived.
I want to make things as small as possible for various reasons and this is about as wide as the painting needs to be to achieve that goal. The width of lines and spacing and edges are all things I considered.
Ultimately I am after something dynamic yet quiet.
